My dad knows this video store owner in Chinatown and he can get anything he wants free. All bootlegs of course, which cost 25 cents a disc to make in China, but whatever.

I've been nagging him to find some wong kar wai movies and finally friday he brings home a packet titled Wong Kar Wai La Revolution in all its fake bootleg glory. I was like wtf, a set?

It turns out its 7 of his films on 3 discs!

Disc A:
As tears go by
Days of being wild
Chungking Express

Disc B:
Ashes of Time
Fallen Angels

Disc C:
Happy Together
In the Mood for Love

WKW has only directed 8 feature films. I already have the REAL region 1 release of 2046, so my WKW collection is complete. Though with horrible quality and with 7 of the 8 being bootlegs, lol

The quality sucks even worse than your typical bootleg since it's so compressed in order to fit 2 or 3 whole films on one disc. Compared to my 2046 real thing, I know I havent gotten the full WKW experience. His films are so gorgeous, it's so incredible. He's from hong kong too, so he's repping the race too, lol.

Good thing the subtitles in english are actually accurate, big question mark with bootlegs. I have a Memoirs of a Geisha bootleg with all the subtitles completely wrong, probably taken from another movie. Words on the screen when the characters aren't talking, you name it! And a couple of random "f*** you" and "i'll kill you tony!" every 5 minutes.

I've seen As the tears go by and Chungking Express already.
I hope to get the real discs soon so I can experience the true WKW, but until then this is satisfying enough for me. WKW rules!

I own Chungking Express, Faye Wong is great!

I have Days of Being Wild, Fallen Angels, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love and Eros coming this week--via Netflix.

If you like WKW, check out Pen-Ek Ratanaruang (He uses Christopher Doyle, same cinematographer as WKW)--Last Life in the Universe (Starring Tadanobu Asano, with a cameo by japanese director Takashi Miike, and a poster homage [look closely] of Ichi the Killer) and 6ixtynin9 ("A story about Six and Nine").
