Insight from inside the organization:
- Apologies to all, but I have to admit that I'm ready for the event to end. Here's how I know: amidst all the excitement of the Brasstown finish, I couldn't wait to get back to the resort we were housed in. I had a 5pm tee time for the exquisite golf course. So as soon as the Broom Wagon cleared the 1k point, they opened the road, and I was GONE. I love cycling, but too much of a good thing...
- Despite the smaller crowds, the Georgia Ford dealers are happy with the response and excitement of the event. They know the Lance factor and how it has changed things. I overheard them in the Ford VIP area at Alpharetta today. One of them wants the race to return to the Centennial Park finish in Atlanta. That will be hard to sell because Alpharetta is proud of the event.
- It was great to see people from all over the country at the race. Still find it odd to run into people I know from 'back home' standing along a road out in the middle of nowhere in N. Georgia.
- Had a guest in our car yesterday. She was almost in tears during the descent. She wasn't expecting the speeds. We follow the GSP troopers at whatever speed they set. Often times, we're hitting 65mph on twisty descents. Tires HOWL on the curves. It's not scary to me, but it is to some. I had three grown men in tears durng last year's event. muahahahaha.
- SO glad to see Haedo win today's stage, but sad to see Gordy Fraser NOT win. It was a poignant passing of the torch from the previous generation of racers to the new generation. Haedo is a super nice guy who can just light it up.
- People were still talking about Floyd's ride on Brasstown. Even the other riders were excited by the string of reports that were being sent over the radios. It was cool to see the soigneurs from other teams cheering at the Big Screen TV at the 1k banner.
- The podium girls are the two coolest people I know on the staff. Angie (blonde) is HILARIOUS. She does a great imitation of race announcer, Dave Towle. And Jen (brunette) is the most elegant young lady you'll ever meet. They both truly enjoy what they're doing, and if you were able to meet them, you'd instantly like them.
- Let the post-event let-down begin. 10 months until the Tour of California.
