I've been visiting my folks this weekend, and we stopped at Wal-Mart on the way back from visiting a relative today. I don't think i'd been to one in over a year.

I quickly decided to occupy myself in the hardware department, since I didn't have to dodge shopping carts in the relatively empty aisles. I came across winshield de-icer on clearance. This particular de-icer just so happened to be methyl alchohol - the perfect rinse for a chain that has been degreased with mineral spirits (my preferred method). I ended up getting a gallon for a dollar. score.

the register actually prompted for an age check when the cashier was scanning it. she just kept tapping OK without even looking at me.

then again, the brain rot that must come from huffing **** like this probably isn't that hard to pick out.

The skinny is this:

mineral spirits are the ideal solvent in metal degreasing applications where low to no residue is desired. the purest mineral spirits leave no residue, however the more widely available odorless mineral spirits can leave a slight residue. This is where methyl alcohol comes in. methyl alcohol removes the residue from petroleum based degreasers, and evaporates off, leaving an effectively pristine surface.

the score is that i have about a year's worth of degreaser that is more effective than practically any other on the market, and I scored it for the grand total of $7
