My name is Paul, I'm 52, and I've gotten back into biking in the past year or so. I had some major surgery (think prostrate, but take away one "r") about two years ago and was noticing a gradual ballooning of my weight, what with not getting any exercise and feeling like I could eat anything I wanted because I had been through hell and back. All that ended the day I saw an ad for the Portland LiveStrong Ride in the summer of '05. I dusted off all 30 pounds of my 30-year old Takara 10-speed, got a new helmet, shorts, and a new attitude and started doing 10, 20, 30, and up to 60 mile rides to get ready for the late September 70 miler that I had signed up for. I raised $1,500 for the cause and rode with pride, even though I got passed by a lot of hardbodies on some of the climbs around Hagg Lake.

After the ride, I ditched the Takara for a Fuji Roubaix, weighing in at about 20 pounds. What a difference! Hills that were impossible to climb before opened up to me. I was slow, but I was still moving on the bike and not walking it up the hills.

I rode a lot when I was a kid and in college (never competively), always for fun. Now I do it for fun and fitness.

Welcome!

There's a very active group of forum members here in Portland who network and do rides together. It's been a great experience to get out there and join 'em.
