Road Cycling - How do you find out about races to compete in?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I want to start racing this spring, but I don't know how to find out about when and where races are. What's the best way to do this?

I'm not sure about your area but I'd bet just like mine if you go to your LBS and pick up one of the many free news-letters/magazines that are available, you will find all kinds of race schedules and entry information. I have thought about entering a race myself, I just have a little more training to do first. O.K. maybe a lot of training.

I highly recommend that you find out as soon as possible about weekend training rides in your area. In most places the racers and more serious recreational riders get together for Saturday or Sunday morning training rides. You need to get experience and a comfort level riding in groups fast at close quarters. A bicycle race is not like a running race. In a running race if you make a mistake you fall and skin your knee. In a cycling race if a rider makes a mistake a lot of people can go down causing injury and bike damage. By all means give racing a try, but understand you have some responsibilities. In your area the training rides may be on hold for the winter, but your LBS can tell you where and when they take place and when they will likely start up. Many areas also have training races, usually on Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings once daylight savings time starts.

Go visit one of the more popular bike shops near you or go to visit your local cycling club if you have one
