This afternoon my oldest son was waiting for me at home after work. "Dad," he says, "Would you be willing to help me get one of the bikes back on the road and set up for me? I'm not going to pay $3.12 a gallon to drive to work." So, we spent two hours getting a bike ready for him. Inside I'm smiling. He rides 8 miles into work tomorrow morning!

There was a TV news item on a guy pawning his bike so he could buy gas!

Hmmm! What's wrong with this picture?

Good for your son.

This morning at 5:30 he rolled out the driveway and headed off to work. He called 45 minutes later and said, "Dad, it only took me 45 minutes to get here. Work doesn't start until 7. What am I going to do now?" I laughed and said he should be pleased with his effort and go find a coffee shop, pretend he's in Europe sitting at an outside cafe with his high tech road bike and just look cool until work starts. He replied, "I don't know why I ask you anything." I told him I was proud of him. He said, "Goodbye, Dad.", and hung up.

Your suggestion sounds about the best way to enjoy 45 minutes before work. As to you being proud of him- I think he should be proud of himself- I know I would be if my estimate of a ride only took half as long.

Petrol here today is $1.76 per litre so think yourselves lucky

Quick update. He continues to ride to work, and last night called to let me know... his butt has stopped hurting!
