I recently built up an older Colnago frame that I came across on ebay. There is a mark under the bottom bracket that reads "C36" and there is a serial number on one dropout, that reads "53 Brev Campagnolo". I am fairly sure it was repainted. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

my guess is late '70's based on the shape of the bottom bracket cutout and the fork tops. number6 or
t-mar can probably nail it down for 'ya. looks nice, by the way.

Thanks for the feedback. It rides great. I've been riding mountain bikes for years. The only road bikes I've had before this were a few Cannondales from 1987 to 1995. This is sooooo much nicer to ride and finding all the right parts was a lot of fun.

Very sweet bike...I think earlier '70s based on the BB shell, but the fork crown looks later to me. I always think of this style as being a late 70s/early '80s favorite. But I'm not a 'Nago expert...post these to the kindly old sages at the Classic Rendezvous forum, one of them can tell you exactly what the serial number means. I suspect the 53 on the dropout is not a serial number, is that close to its size, by any chance? Even if turns out to be a later fork on an earlier frame, it still is a great one.

There I go again...should always look before I post: turns out there are pics of a "70s" Colnago Mexico with that style of fork crown in the CR main pages, so...maybe yours is a Mexico?
ah, I wish it were so. Then my super would be a Mexico. That's just the fork crown for the late '70's and early '80s...It might be a replacement fork for this bike, but it is probably just caught in the transition period between the old bottom bracket cutout and the new one. Search the Classic Rendezvous archives; there was someone who put a list of little Colnago changes together and posted it last fall sometime...

The frame is a 54; although I never measured it. I thought the serial number was supposed to be on the dropout. Maybe that is the size.
Thanks for the feedback, anyway.
That is the serial number; you are right.

I would estimate the frame to be early 70's as there is no Colnago engraving on the top of the seat stays. The BB screams of early 70's also.
The Campy gruppo appears to be 83 onwards.

Thanks for the info. The components are all stuff I picked up here and there. I never tried to date them, but you're probably right. A few bits, like the seat post, bottom bracket and pedals are new.

Not enough information to pin it down totally, the fork crown and lack of a cut out on the top of the top head lug point after 1976, more information would include, the rear dropouts, fork blade reinforcements, down tube braze on compliment, top tube braze ons (if original). So far post '76, pre '83.
Looks like a better than fair chance it has been repainted, does the rear brake bridge have recessed fixing nut acceptance? Those calipers indicate the front has.

I'm stuck at the office, but I will try to get some more info and pics tonight or tomorrow. Thanks again.

My camera is acting up, but I still hope to get some more pics up. The brake hardware is not recessed and the only braze-ons are for one bottle and the shifters.

The short dropouts without the holes for the PortaCatena indicates prior to 1978, a wee bit variable as these parts were often bought in large batches and used till gone. Colnago moved to under the BB cable guides in about 1981. The fork crown and reinforcements point to near 1979...Hmmm. The fork and rear bridge while drilled for allen key fittings, do not appear factory, the crown is normally recessed to hide the lip of the internally threaded nut. No Downtube or top tube shot to assits, so 1976-1979 best judgement at this time. Minor chance of a replacement fork.
