yeah. I used to be there, briefly. and grew up there for what it's worth. check these guys out. they were just getting off the ground when I was there (this past summer):

they were very cool and authentic and came from a variety of backgrounds and bikeshops... so maybe not a bad way to learn more and meet a number of good people at the same time. I had good experiences with several shops there--not as much selection as some places but some cool people. Also, in case you havent come across them yet, these cats have regular & more event-y rides:

I commute 2 to 3 days a week here in Memphis. My route is short (6 miles each way). I work at Poplar & Massey and live near the U of M. I take Goodlett to Shady Grove. It's an all neighboorhood route that sees very little traffic except for the last mile or so. I'll be happy to try to answer any questions you may have. Nice to see another (soon to be) Memphian riding.
To expand on blipd's comments....
The hightailers are a good bunch to ride with. Nice club. I have only ridden with them once- but I had a blast and would like to have a go again soon. I ride pretty regularly on The Peddler's thurs night mountian bike boogie ride. It's also a hoot. Would love to have you along anytime!

Im not a commuter, but a college student (Rhodes) and know the area pretty well (traffic/road conditions, etc) if you need some pointers!
