Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - I was shamed on my fixed gear this weekend :(

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Friend picked up a new trekky Trek recently, and he wanted to show off his new gear on a ride. Normally my legs, lungs, heart, and 46x17 takes me anywhere--short quick uphills, rolling hills, long gentle uphills--and more quickly than everyone else, too :D

But this particular route took me to my Waterloo... we were riding at a good pace on moderate terrain but then BAM.... ran into this crazy SF/Lombard type street that just went up and up and up and up. I was able to grind 1/3rd of the way before having to dismount and shamefully walk my bike up the slope.... while my friend creeped up it on 26x27 gear with this pained smirk on his face. ughhhh

So in a few months when I start riding with the company team I'm going to pick up one of these badboys: Colnago Master w/ Campy Centaur group

going to rejoin the dark side... or the light side... or whatever :D

You're only allowed to ride a road bike if you maintain the irony by riding it on the track.

Consider yourself warned!

26/27? his cog was bigger than his chainring? they make 27t cogs?

he was running on a triple setup. the triple that i had (before i converted) ran 46/36/26.

rear cassettes usually go down to 25 or 27... given that his bike is entry-level and with a triple crankset (less "racy"), i guessed on 27 :)

Plenty of cassettes go all the way up to 32t, but most of those aren't on road bikes.
