On a rare sunny, espicially for this time of the year in Central Ohio, I pulled the bike out of the basement to clean off the dust after deciding it was time to hit the road, and get back into racing.
A former Cat 3 racer, I relocated from Albuquerque (by way of San Antonio), to Columbus in the fall of 2000. Do I miss San Antonio? No. Miss Albuquerque? Very much. But Columbus is my home, and with the exception of the extended periods of grey weather, I like it here. Great home, decent job.
When I moved here, I was pretty much burnt out, and in the fall of 2001, the bike went to the basement, and I took to ice skates. Short story, I started playing hockey, and fell in love with it. I skated out briefely, then switched to goalie. I had a good run, dropped a lot of money on gear, and more gear. I felt it has kept me in good shape, but I was getting the goalie gut (too many post game beers). I went from 160 to 200 pounds.
I had been playing hockey 3 or 4 times a week. After 3 years, I started feeling burnout. The team I was playing with sucked, and gave me no support. And if I were to take away the goals that I gave up on third and fourth rebounds, we could have won the championship. I got frustrated and decided I would take some time off....and pull out the bike.
Will there be a hockey liquidation sale in my basement in the future?
I pulled the bike out a few weeks ago. I've been lucky with the really nice weather (meaning more sun than usual). I'm still not putting in mega miles, and will no be putting in the same miles the last time I was racing. I'm also training smarter than in the past.
I've found I've got a good base going. I'm in better shape than I expected. I just need to loose the goalie gut. I did lose five pounds last week. The legs have been shaved, I'm getting the cyclist tan. I haven’t felt this good, mentally and physically, in at least 3 years, and it's only going to get better as I get into racing form (or at least trying to). I'm planning on my return to the start line in June. I certainly can’t compete at the same level as I did in the past, but I feel I can hang with the geezers.
Feeling 10 years younger, already.
