and inside the free cones, they put free ice cream! :D

I did this earlier but it was a very short race with only one B&Js easily accessible.

yeah, i can only think of the one location...but a ride is always fun. even though i'm not really an ice cream fan...you can't complain if it's free, right?

now if i can just convince my girlfriend that the riding will negate the extra calories and crap. shouldn't be hard.

pdx is the airport code.

ok, but is there a reason behind the acronym?

not that i can think of. in addition to the airport, portland state's website is "pdx.edu." so its well established, to all of us who live here.

The airport code is a three letter designator for a commercial airport, or other travel point -- e.g. a large bus station. These are the codes that airlines and pilots use to identify airports and are used in timetables, baggage tags, tickets, advertisements, Airline and Global Reservation Systems. There are approximately 9,000 of them in use of a total of 17,576 available. IATA in Geneva is responsible for the designation of these codes.

gotta differentiate from portland, maine.

that's cool information...i think the question was more about why "pdx" was chosen, rather than, say, "por" or "pdo" or somesuch. perhaps that, and why it became the city's nickname. no one calls los angeles "lax". not that i've ever heard.

speaking of the roots of the name of this beautiful city...i kind of like the ring of "new boston". it would be just as cool if capt. pettygrove lost that coin toss.

The codes are assigned by the International Air Transport Association. Who knows why they chose pdx. Portland International Airport in Maine is pwm. I don't know why folks refer to Portland as "PDX". To me it makes about as much sense as calling Chicago MDW or ORD. I actually prefer Stumptown but I wasn't around when they flipped the coin.

First hit from Google. (http://www.skygod.com/asstd/abc.html) By the way MDW stands for Midway (the name of the airport).

yeah, but if you referred to portland by "stumptown", you'd get hit with a legal affidavit from specialized asking you to stop...probably take your city away, too.
