The last run - ever - of Suzue hubs.
Sometime next week we're getting three pairs of the NJS hubs, and one pair of the SB model. These things are hot. Also getting gold anozized Nitto Jaguar stem, Nitto Jaguar seatpost, some pedals, some bars, some bullhorns, and a couple of other fun things.

Because due to NJS rule changes, all of the NJS hubs will be out of carbon - like these (http://www.planet-x-bikes.com/track/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=122&MMN_position=255:255) (the new NJS Suzue ProMax carbon hubs)
(good luck skidding on a carbon hub)

Why on earth do they do things like destroy dies. Grrrrr. That's kind of a bummer, the SB's are supposed to be nice hubs.

For the same reason they cancel out plates in fine art printmaking I'm assuming. Increases collector value, to assure no more are produced.

It's not that anyone offed themselves. NJS rule changes are allowing for carbon hubs starting this year. (and I think by "allow" I mean "require"). So, if track racers on all contents want lighter hubs, and some US fashonistas want the old hubs, Carbon it is! :p

I don't think they're as matte as they appear. I'll snap better pictures when we get the hubs. The ones above are from EAI.

Summerinside, what are you talking about?
They're not requiring you use carbon hubs, I think they're going to allow Disc wheels.
Agree with Marcus. What has been approved is the use of a carbon disk rear wheel. This is partly because keirin is down to exactly one manufacturer of tubular rims (Araya) with only two approved rim alternatives and no intention to pursue others. NJS spokes are about as limited, and as keirin riders torque their bikes more (and have gotten to ride lenticular disk wheels), they realize how limiting their wheel designs are. The hubs are just the tail on the dog.
Araya disk wheels have already been approved for NJS rating, although the wheels aren't actually approved for parimutuel racing use yet (as equipment they're OK'd, but referees won't allow them into the races until basically everyone's had a chance to buy and get used to the new equipment). People apparently are seeking approval for Mavic Comete's (which are the keirin favorite) but Mavic just isn't putting a lot of energy into this, and it takes a lot of energy to get the approval. I've heard very different stories from different parties inside Mavic, but the folks who actually sell Mavic in Japan aren't very sanguine about it.
Oh, and I don't know where the ongoing production of Suzue carbon Promax's is coming from. All of them are going away. The carbon ones didn't really sell well anyway.

Isn't the older Araya disc sort of a puke brown with a disco ring in the center?
Edit: yup. New design is MUCH nicer.

nuff' said. I actually enjoy the performance of my Promax hubs, and would consider these, if they were not so expensive. It is like when they first offered Bossk via cereal boxtops. I waited and waited and was the first kid on the block with Bossk. I thought it was the coolest thing. But then a bus ran him over.

Anodized components look a lot better when they have experienced some beausage. I bet a 5 or 10 year old, well-used, gold ano nitto/promax gruppo would look pretty nice.
That being said, my fave bikes tend to look like this:

c'mon - the "jest" part is what makes it.
see ya soon! chicago needs more cyclists, and yes - YOU should come out to the track when you get here. ERV has some upcoming clinics for women and I am totally trying to push more people onto the track. It is a blast and I think everyone here who has hopped on for laps would agree that it is a good time. I know you said you arent a racer, but you dont have to be. ya know?

have we not learned that i have no sense of humor? (now i'm kidding)
and ain't no way i'm racing on the track. i'm self conscious enough as it is. i don't need people watching me. really. it's not about the fact that i'd get my butt kicked. it's about the fact that people would *see* my butt as it was getting kicked. (at least in alleycats i can hide in the alleys. among the cats.)
ps - might i finally meet you next weekend?

pretty nice little novelty, pretty damn spendy though
The Mavic disk is a bit stiffer, but the Araya is quite a bit lighter, even more so in the newer configuration. The Mavic is pretty robust -- you can crash it, ship it all around the place, and so on, and it just keeps on ticking. The Araya doesn't take much to punch a significant hole in it, and when that happens, it tends to mean the disk is over while the Mavic Comete allows you to repair a hole and keep going. (Disks tend to get dents or holes when two wheels pound each other so if you travel a lot to races and the like, you pretty much have to be able to deal with these.) The Arayas were already more expensive than any other disk (something like $2800 vs $1900 for a Mavic Comete) and the new one is several hundred more. Of course, Mavic is just releasing an Io rear wheel -- aero 5-spoke with a very deep dish rim. That's almost $4K. Or you can get a deep-dished Lightweight track rear for about the same $4K. I still don't think that the carbon Suzue Promax hubs are getting NJS approval -- or that they're still going to be made.
