I've got the cheap suzue POS rear hub on my bike. i noticed today that there is some play in the wheel. It seems like the play is between the axle and the hub. is there something i can tighten there? Is the hub just on its way out?

Cone nuts.
The black nuts on either side of the hub need tightening.

but learn how to do it properly. If you just tighten those without also doing the locknuts you'll be worse off than before. Go to park tools site and read the faq on overhauling loose-ball hubs. And don't worry about those hubs, mine are still rolling strong after years of abuse messengering in all weather and no maintenance.

Reading the park tool site makes it sound like i only need to adjust one side of the hub. Is that right?

you need to make sure both sides are tight. adjustment can be done with just one side.

True dat. Tighten the hell out of one side, then adjust and tighten the other. Bing, done.
