Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - what i learned about the metro north:

-you can't take bicycles on the train during peak hours.
-some conductors can throw a lot of attitude.
-it's entirely possible to get thrown off of two trains in under ten minutes
-getting in a physical altercation with a conductor makes me very angry.
-there's nothing he can do. see the woman in the information window.
-there's nothing she can do. call the customer service number.
-there's no human at the customer service window.
-wrenches come in handy.
-having several handfuls of bike parts on a train during peak hours =/= having a bike on the train during peak hours.
-riding calms me down. even if it's riding in new york, which is crazy and exciting.

- i payed $5 for a life pass to be able to bring a bike on trains.
- most conductors love giving you a hard time if you look like you're not one of their daily commuters.
- ticket prices are ridiculous!
- mta police doesn't take kindly to graffiti and will arrest you (me).
- my friend got into a fist fight with a conductor back in high school.

Recently took my bike on the LIR and they have all these rules - can't ride in this direction during these hours or on these days, only two bikes on a train at a time, can only ride in this car, etc. So I followed all the rules to the letter so there would be no problems, even bought a permit to have my bike on the train, and still I was hassled. I swear this guy was trying everything he could to keep my bike off the train. Then he tells me I need rope to attach my bike to the train and I tell him I have my chain lock. He says no not good enough an won't let me on until I convince him my friend has rope, and thank god he didn't check. A lot of hassle considering the train was nearly empty.

$5 bike pass for life for LIRR/MetroNorth you can maiul it in or get it at one booth at Penn Station.

Many conductors like to hassle you regardless if you have the permit or not. I've gotten into screaming matches with conductors before over this stuff.

Also, as a rule you can never have bikes on peak trains even if you have the bike pass.

i have the permit. they've asked me if i have one, i always say yes, have never been asked to show it.
