I have the opportunity to purchase a used bike with the following specs:
HARO EXTREME 21.5inch frame lightweight 27 gears, Cromoly and aluminum composite frame. All custom components, by Ringle, Control Tech, Shimano Decore LX front & rear derailer w/ Vetta gel high performance seat and Syncros seat post. Includes; 2 bottle cages.
The bike is 5 years old - not used much - properly maintained - excellent condition. I ride around town as well as commute to work every once in a while. The commute is 16 miles each way with lots of small to medium hills (Queens, New York area.) Any one have any opinions? I'm going to look at it tonight.

Full suspension mountain bike is likely heavy for easy commuting around NY streets. 1.5" slick tires would make it roll easier. For commuting 16 miles you would be better with 700c (road) wheels with tires 32 mm width or less.

Haro's are bombproof, even the aluminum ones. I have a steel one which I use for commuting, but I have to say a full suspension bike for commuting is overkill even for NYC. Too bad the frame isn't a 17.5 in. one cuz then I'd buy it. :D

Thanks - I do most of my riding between Far Rockaway and Queens (Rego Park) if you know the area so I need something sturdy but not too heavy that would weigh me down. I'm also tall (6'3") so I hope the size is right. I'll test it out later. I was just concerned driving a mountain bike instead of a road bike for the commute.

That sounds like a sweet bike, at a great deal. I'd take it and throw some slicks one there. The best slicks are Specialized FatBoy slicks (1.25" wide; no thread). If later you decide it isn't for you, you can sell it, and certainly make your money back.

Thanks all for the info. Well I went to see the bike last night. It was beautiful - just as described. Only problem was the positioning. When I raised the seat for my height the handles were so low down I felt very uncomfortable. Especially for city riding and long distances I need to have my hands higher. Is it a big job to replace the fork with a taller one? Expensive? Any one know? Thanks again.

Replace the stem w/ one that rises more. Also, replace the handlebars w/ riser bars. Replacing the fork would be expensive. Slap some slicks on it and you'll be set. I have IRC Metros on mine and they're pretty good.
