Actually, he is correct in this regard. Gas is still *too* cheap, transport *is* too expensive ..
Why?
-Not enough taxes on gas, and not enough Federal & State Support for good transit.

Exactly, taxes on gas should be higher and Federal and State governments should be investing more in mass transit. The Government of CT is particularly short sighted in this regard. According to a CT State Representative I know there has been a lot of resistance in Hartford to investing in mass transit for Fairfield County because it is the wealthiest part of the state by a wide margin. The state is finally buying new train cars and will assess a surcharge of one dollar a trip to help pay for them.

I have no statistical proof from an official source, but my own observation suggests to me that the percentage of single-occupany bicycles may be even higher.

What exactly don't I get?

You seem to be the one having trouble grasping reality which is that 90% of commuter cars have single occupants because gas is too cheap, public transport too expensive and the roads not congested enough.
You don't get that your excuses for driving a car in your circumstances seem pretty lame.

You may not like my reasons for driving a car. I don't consider them excuses since I am not apologizing for driving a car. Perhaps you can console youself with the news that since we moved to Manhattan, my wife no longer drives a car (she does like to take cabs though so maybe not). At the risk of raising your blood pressure further, many of my coworkers live in Manhattan. Most of those who own cars drive them to work in CT.

However, the purpose of sharing my commuting arranges with the forum was not to annoy you but to illustrate one possible why 90% of commuter cars have a single occupant. I pass a lot of them going the other way when I am driving to work in the morning. Their cars aren't moving of course.

BTW almost a quarter of Manhattan households own at least one car (but slightly less than 1% own two) .

Just who do those decadent snobs think they are. You can fit at least three people on those things (handlebars, rear rack.)

BTW getting rid of my car before the lease expires would require me to come up with at least $5000 in cash and once I got rid of the car, I would need to rent one at least a couple of weekends a month. I prefer to just let the lease run out.

Yea..same thing happened to me i'm still paying off a couple of grand for the extra miles(kilos) we put on the leased car...stupidist thing I ever did was to get a leased vehicle..Smartest thing was to learn to ride a bike again

That's an amazing statistic.

And what is your excuse...er...reason for not carpoooling with these other needlessly polluting cagers? Is there some way this too would cause you a little expense or inconvenience?

Here is a revolutionary idea-- stop and give a fellow countryman a lift.

They don't live in the same neighborhood/aren't on the same schedule. However I do occasionally give people rides when their schedules match mine.
