Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Can you use a Arai drum brake on a flip-flop hub?

The manual states it can be used on tandem hubs or any other type with right handed threads on the left side. Isn't that what a flip flop hub uses?

no they're still right handed while on the left


The largest manufacturer of this type is Arai, whose brakes are screwed onto hubs with conventional freewheel threading on the left side of the rear hub and operated via Bowden cables.

you can thread it on, but do you have the required chainstay clearance to accomodate it?
aren't tandem rears usually 140 mm?

Well daing, you are right. But what about if you used the drum brake on the right side, and did a left side fixed drive. At least that way you'd have a lock ring holding things together.


Any other suggestions on making a rear drum brake on a fixed hub?

Well daing, you are right. But what about if you used the drum brake on the right side, and did a left side fixed drive. At least that way you'd have a lock ring holding things together.

If the brake is on the left side and you use it, the brake would tighten, not loosen. No lockring needed (Unless you were using the brake while riding backwards, really fast).

If it was on the right side, braking would loosen it.
