Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Fixed gear, eggbeater pedals, no brakes = Theft deterrant?

Just wondering. Has anyone ever had their bike stolen and found it abandoned nearby because the thief was not able to ride it? Or better yet, has anyone ever witness their bike being stolen and gotten the free entertainment of watching a person try to ride it and end up eating pavement?

I remember reading a thread where somebody saw some idiot college kid attempt to steal their bike but was unable to ride it, and the bike owner went after them and got it back. I cant find the thread though...

I ride my bike with eggbeaters with flip flops sometimes to Blockbuster or to pick up a pizza. Egg beaters will only stop non bicycling people

sure $90 dollar pedals on a trendy bike probably won't be at all appealing to bike thieves ;)

Seriously, real bike theives know what they are looking for, and egg beaters and the lack of brakes won't even slow them down. They aren't planning to ride you bike away anyhow.

The only people that would be put off by that are opportunistic thieves, and a halfway decent lock will be sufficient for them.

yea. real bike thevies would prob. be turned on by the fact that your bike has egg beaters and lack of breaks.

nah.. they can ride fine, it's the stopping that gets you with the eggbeaters. i think the only kind of theif it would stop would be someone who hasn't ridden fixed, and gets thrown by the no coast, followed by rolling off the beaters.

and yea, i had the same fantasy. built up my beater originally with stubby bars (no more than 4 inches on each side) and some eggbeaters. toyed with the idea of leaving it outside just for entertainment. then i remembered how trendy these bikes are and how stupid i am. moved on.

Or a pair of Lake clipless sandals.

actually they have no surface for standard pedal wrench (14)... one'd need a large allen wrench to work from its axis :D but i did put on the plastic clipless adapter tonight! :D

Remember that very few serious bike thieves will be riding your bike away from the scene of the crime.

bike thieves don't steal bikes because they happen upon them and say, "wow, i'd like to ride that away from here, and what a coincidence, i've got boltcutters and other tools and what-have-you!" they steal bikes because they're prepared to find nice bikes, cut them loose fast, and cart them away even faster (repeating as desired), to sell them. not to ride them.

anyone who's stealing a bike to ride it is not going to go after higher end bikes. nor is it likely that they'll be equipped with the tools necessary to break the type of lock that somebody who's riding a high-end bike should have (if they lock-and-leave in the first place!)
