Track Cycling - Completely humbled.....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
First outing at the PDX velodrom...ass handed to me.
It was more effort to make 3 fast laps that it was to climb a 2 mile steep climb on my roadie.
After 2 laps my legs are burning, push that last one and my lungs started to burn. Pull down to the apron and weeze for 2 cool off laps and do it all again. Obviously general road bike fitness doesnt necessarily translate over to the track.

Your road fitness will help you in longer races, beyond 15 laps. It will probably provide you with decent recovery between races, once you get accustomed to the shorter events. The track racing definitely carries over to those hard 1-4 minute efforts during road events.
Everybody finishes last sometimes if they are willing to race against strong competition. Lots of people won't even get on the start line because of their fear of failure. You can't hide at the track when you get beaten like you can in road events. But, all the regulars have been there too and there's a kind of respect among those who are willing to face that public defeat and keep coming back to get better.
