View Full Version : When to change a bent rim?

I have had this older road bike for quite a while ( I use it for commuting and keep my new bike for riding more seriously). The back wheel suffered hits on a few occasions. I have had it trued at my LBS a few times in the past. This time they told me "this is the best we can do". They suggest that I change the wheel. My question is: is it not possible to just steighten a slightly bent rim (other than by adjusting the tension on the spokes)? When does one decide it is really necessary to buy a new wheel? I ask because I would like to keep the bike (Miyata 610) with its original parts if possible.

How about just a rim swap?
If you can find a matching rim, it is easy to do.

Just buy a new one. A bent rim (as opposed to an out-of-true rim) that old isn't worth saving.

I indeed ended up buying a new wheel. However, I realized that there are not many companies that manufacture 27 inches rims. Its too bad to throw away a rim like that. I am sure that there must be ways to straighten a bent rim. In any case, it would have implied removing all the spokes and rebuilding the wheel. I just don't have enough time for that. I prefer riding!

I LOVE riding on wheels I built up myself.
