i just bought a pair, i noticed that there is a lil rattling or clicking sound when spin them by hand, could this be due to a slight binding or lack of grease? other wise these hubs are superb!

if you try to jerk the axle up and down and get a bit of knocking.
just tighten up the cups.

I have the same problem with mine (28 hole, so not technically NJS). I overhauled them, but it didn't make it any better. Some people love these hubs though, suggesting that perhaps its an issue of poor quality control.

Promax tried to be in the middle between formula/surly and phil/campy/DA, but IMHO, they are the worst of both worlds.

Are your hubs the promax SB hubs or the juniors. I believe there is a difference in quality.

Just out of interest how do you know its missing two ball bearings? Do you have the Suzue spec sheet? Do you know how many bearings it should have on each side?

theres a big ass gap the width of two ball bearings in the cup. and no matter how i adjust the play out of the cones , once i put the wheel in the rear frame dropouts and tighten it , theres major binding.no matter what i do i cant remedy it! SUX

Keep inserting balls until one is forced out and remove the last two. Magic!

na975
04-28-06, 08:11 PM
what do u mean remove the last two? i think the axle is bent

12XU

The way to know how many bearings go in a hub is by the process I just explained. Remove the last two balls when one is forced out. This obviously assumes you have access to extra bearings of the proper diameter.

na975
04-28-06, 08:15 PM
so you saying that not all the bearings are the same diameter, and thats why it would pop out and yes i have extra bearings that i bought for my bb, they seem to be the same size.

12XU
04-28-06, 08:22 PM
Umm..there are about 5 different bearings sizes. I doubt the bearings in your bb are the same size as in the hub. Generally, BB bearings are a bit larger.

tomorrow i will take the axles, bearings etc. from my DA rear hub and transplant it to the promax hub to what see changes.

What 12XU is trying to tell you is that you should NOT have a solid ring of bearings on the inside of your hub. There is *supposed* to be a space (generally the size of 2 or 3 bearings) so that the bearings that are there can do their job, rather than binding up and trashing your hub.

Promax tried to be in the middle between formula/surly and phil/campy/DA, but IMHO, they are the worst of both worlds.

Claptrap.

I'm not knocking your specific loose ball promax hubs. Maybe yours are just fine. All i know is that the races or cups or something on mine were a bit crunchy from jump, even after new bearings and an overhaul. I mean, they weren't TERRIBLE, but I expected a lot more. That's why I chalk it up to poor quality control.

Not a fan of suzue.

after working on these hubs for better than 3 hours to find that sweet spot, i discoverd that the races in the rear hub are not perfectly round so that when the hubs spins ever so slightly, the axle scraping the poorly machined bore that the axle goes through. i took the axle out cleaned everthing, then ran some emery cloth through it to reduce burrs. I then repacked cups using( super lube) grease, this imo is D best lube. now its smooth and ready to be married to rims.

the first fixie i bought a few years back was on ebay. the ******** i bought it from built the wheels himself, and apparently the hubs too. the rear had had two completely different bearing sizes, and when i finally took it to my lbs after trying for days to get it adjusted right the guy just laughed and said he'd never seen anything like it. good luck with yours, and remember- it could be worse.

i think i fixed the problem, seems to roll a hole lot smoother now. I learned a lesson about going cheap on parts - you get what you pay for stands true!

the rear hub on the suzue jr. uses different sized bearings on each side iirc. it's bizarre

yeah, maybe that's what they were. i didn't know then even the little i know now, so i just sold them really cheap on ebay. if only i would have been a bikeforums member way back then...:D

well i have the promax deluxe loose balls type, the balls are the same dia on ea. side of the hub 6mm. when i compare both the promax versus the dura ace 7600 hubs, the DA are precision hub without any flaws! no wonder why suzue is folding.

I bought a pair of new njs promax a couple of weeks ago. (Cheap too! ~$80. I got a special price in a shop in Abiko, outside Tokyo). Still in the box.. Noticed now that scraping noise too. I´ll report back when I have repacked them.. At least I can say "they were cheap" :E

I just got a pair of wheels built up from Bicycle Station with ProMax loose bearing hubs and I love them. They are super smooth and spin flawlessly. I was originally going to get Formula's but they offered me a deal on ProMax's and I'm super happy with the hubs and the wheels. I didn't honestly think I'd be able to tell the difference between them and my old stock Bianchi Pista wheels but it's night and day. I've never ridden Phil's or DA's but I have zero desire to upgrade these.

i have not yet built my wheels on these hubs, but you make me feel better about them!

again, some people seem to have trouble, and others dont. the trouble that some have seems to sound similar to the trouble that I had/have. maybe a bad batch slipped through somewhere?

I hope a repack will do it. It´s only my front hub that makes the noise. I´ll ask the seller about it next time I see him. I´ll report back any good or bad news.

Well, I just did that. Repacked the front hub with Phil grease. That´s it - problem solved!

i'm a firm believer in cleaning repacking every new ball bearing assembly before riding it.

it's rare that a component has come from the factory as greased or tightened as i like it.
