I would like to convert a SRAM 3.0 8 speed grip shift to a trigger or rapidfire shifter.

Is any brand/type necessary?

SRAM X.7 comes in 8-speed and should do what you want. I'd want to see one before I committed myself to buy one, the shift levers look a little bit funky to me compared to Shimano.

The only other alternative that I know of would be to get a Shimano rear derailleur so that you could use a Shimano shifter set.

the 3.0 is a 1:1 ratio mech so any sram 6 speed shifter APART from those listed here (http://www.sram.com/en/sram/mountain/21shifters/index.php) will work. (those listed in that link are 2:1 ratio and wont work)

I'm not a fan of SRAM's all-thumb trigger shifters. With Shimano, you could grib the bar and shift without moving your hands around. With SRAM, you have to rotate your grip around to move between the upshift and downshift thumb levers. If it weren't for the fact that the actual shifting is great, I'd go back to Shimano.
