I replaced my front derailer cable and now it won't shift the chain to the big ring. What did I do wrong?

You didn't give us much to go on. My guess is that you didn't have the shifter in the easiest gear position when you connected the shift cable.

that could be it, so when I tighten up the cable, I need to be on the smallest front ring and largest cog?

You have to be in the smallest front chainring and the front shifter has to be in it's easiest shift position. Assuming you have Shimano STIs, I generally push the little lever a half dozen times or so before connecting the shift cable to the derailleur. Then I pull the cable just snug with my needle nose pliers and tighten that sucker down. I seldom find it necessary to do any fine tuneing using a barrel adjuster.

It's amazing how often this point gets overlooked when setting up a drivetrain or just changing shift cables. Of course, the same concept applies to rear shifting too.
It seems most of the questions starting "my bike won't shift to the largest or (smallest) chainring (or cog)" are the result of this.

Yup. The reason that I know is because I've done it myself MORE THAN ONCE!

alright it worked, I'm trying to learn to do all bike reapirs myself. I'm sick of spending all kinds of money for simple repairs

Great. What you did is a very common oversight but I'll bet you will recognize it when it happens again. And yes, I've done it too :)
