View Full Version : Trainers for 20" (in my case, folding) bikes?

This just came up in another thread, and I didn't want to derail it.

With an indoor trainer, I use one of my 700c wheeled bikes. I've heard of people using BFs with an indoor trainer, but you need one that will take 20 inch wheels, which most "normal" trainers won't. Or you might be able to use rollers. You could also try asking this on Bike Friday's "Yak" mailing list. I think the topic has come up there.
Strange that this should be brought up, I was just thinking about getting one. Any reviews/recommends for a 20" trainer? It'd be great if it also fit 16" wheels, but 20" is priority.

Hi, bookishboy.
I've used rollers (a very old Performance model) with my Xootr Swift (20" wheels) with no problem. In fact, because the top tube of the Swift is lower than that of my road bike (700c wheels) it's really eaiser to use it on rollers. I'd think most rollers would work with 16" wheels too, but you'd want to make sure that the rear wheel is large enough to roll on, as opposed to get jammed or fall in between, the two rear rollers.

There are several recumbents with 20 inch rear wheels that have available trainers. That may be an additional source of trainers if the folder selection is too thin.

Cycleops has an adapter for 20" bikes for their trainers. Even tho' I don't own a cycleops trainer, I almost bought an adapter off of ebay for $25 including shipping, because I'm planning to get a trainer next winter season.

I checked the Kinetic by Kurt website for their roadmachine model, and they report that their trainer can be adapted for 16 to 29 inch wheels. Anyone have firsthand experience with this? Any input would be really appreciated since it'd be nice if I could bring a trainer on trips in case of really bad weather and work out in the hotel room.

Here's a trainer specifically made for small wheels:
SportCrafters (http://www.hoenig.biz/)

Looks pretty light and compact. No personal experience, so you may want to search for reviews.
