Advocacy & Safety - I was complimented for riding a bike yesterday

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was leaving work last night and walking towards the parking lot. There is often a huge stretch limo parked waiting and yesterday the driver is outside the car smoking. He has seen me on a few occassions riding from work and yesterday, he engages me in a conversation about bicycling, how far I commute, how long I've been doing etc. and then tells me it cool I'm commuting.
I was a little set aback, but definitely flattered. Most suits (and I'm one also) that see me avert thier eyes when they see me on a bike pulling into work. Must be embarrassed that one of their own would actually be riding a bicycle.

I know that look...it's not that they are embarrassed for us...they are embarrassed at their fat lazy selves. Ever notice that the athletic execs never give you that look...rather they give you a smile and engage in conversation...they see you as one of them, if biking was their thing they'd be riding in too. It's the slugs in suits that give you the look...they don't get it and are embarrassed to be reminded that they are not only out of shape, but probably could not do what you are doing if they wanted to. The real losers are those that then attempt to make fun of you or whisper behind your back. It's usually the admin assts and secretaries that put them bozos in their place though...letting the bozo overhear them talking about how HOT you are in your biking gear. :D
I work at a car dealership and bike to work. Because there is no place outside to park it, I keep my bike next to the service desk and by the doorway where customers enter. Many stop to check the bike out and usually ask who rides it to work. I haven't had a negative comment. There is the occasional, "don't you worry about traffic", but overall most admit to being envious that I commute by bike.
