Let me spell out the situation about my bike and what I want to do with it. I recently got a Jake the Snake cyclocross bike and simply love it. Its primary use will be for road riding - although it might see some dirt, and will, I suspect, see some gravel road use (the main reason I bought it vs a road bike.) I would like to keep the stock wheels with knobby tires for gravel road use (they work great, and would not be getting a tonne of use anyways) and would like to build up a set of wheels for use on the road. Thing is, I want to maintain the bike as a "cross" bike and not just stick a set of road wheels on it.

So the goal is to "hot rod" the cross bike as time passes. (I did a similar make over on my old mtn bike - replacing the stock wheels with a mavic crossride set - love them, cheaper than crossmax, and very tough - chris king head set, easton bar, etc). I want to put a chris king headset on it, much better sealed cartridge bearing bottom bracket (will dip into mtn bike parts bins if needed!) but I am stuck on what wheels to use.

I think there are two basic options - build up a custom set, or a wheel set like I have on my mtn bike. I love the set on the mtn bike, and would go for it if I could, but have been unable to find a cross bike specific wheel set on the mavic website. Does anyone have any ideas for dedicated wheel sets or a good hub/rim combo that has worked well for them? I hope to run 700 by 23 tires on it if that helps...

Thanks.

American Classic Hurricanes are dedicated cyclocross wheels.

...depends on your spacing...

If you're running discs, look for wheels off a C-dale Bad Boy.

If you're not, then find a pair of hubs with the appropriate spacing and have a pair of wheels built. I'm running XTR hubs with Velocity Escape rims. Tufo T-34s are glued on. Mmmmmmm nice.
