Hi all,

I registered here a couple of days back and here is something about me...

I am pretty new to cycling. What has drawn me to cycling is the desire to be car-free. I currently work about 12 miles from home and I have been commuting 2-4 days a week to work for the last month or so..I do all my shopping in my bike now.

I bought a brand new commuter bike and I am so proud of it. I live in Vancouver, BC and here it is pretty hilly. The best part of it are the downhills (except when a car is parked in bike lane at the bottom of the hill and I have to stop and merge with the traffic!). I love them! But I find it very difficult going up the hills :(. I am hoping that I will improve with consistent riding.

Hope to keep in touch with you all..

Cheers,
Raji.

Yes Raji, hills will get easier with more miles on the bike.

Hello Raji and welcome

I also am from Vancouver, BC, actually from Richmond. All flat. The only hills are the highway overpasses.

I do like riding into Vancouver from Richmond and then go around to English Bay to UBC and home or to False Creek and around to Stanley Park, etc. Nice hill work. Will need to try the Cypress Mtn road or Seymour. One day.

I have also worked at getting around more on the bike, commuting to work 2 to 3 times per week, 55k round trip. To get better at riding up the hills in Vancouver is to just do it and do more often. It does get easier. Some days not. But plenty of times it just gets better. Just means riding more often.

When I started riding more seriously in 97 with weekly Saturday am rides with an older friend, 23 years older, will be 69 this February, doing 20k was hard and I had trouble keeping up with him. Now I do 35k to 50k without difficulty and my friend has trouble to keep up with me.

Riding more often is the key and you will get better and will enjoy cycling more.

Have fun.
