Can I safely put a 700c tire on a 27" rim? I just picked up a used bike, and it's got 27" rims, and I only have 700 tires laying around. Would this be a bad idea?

Will not fit. A 700c tire has a bead seat diameter of 622 mm and a 27" tire is 630 mm. There is absolutely no interchangability of tires. You can use the same inner tubes but that is all.

If you had spare 700c wheels, chances are you could put them on your new used bike. You would just have to check whether the brakes will adjust for the difference.

Yes, this is often possible. I've done it on two different bikes, an early '80's Trek and a mid-80's Bridgestone that both came with 27" wheels. In each case the brake shoes could be lowered the required 4 mm to line up with the new 700c rims.

I think this is an excellent option. I often use 700 wheels for on an older 27" bike to get more clearance for a larger tire.

If you're going to go with Kenda 27" tires, try K-Mart. They sell them for $8.00.
