Just got a new car - Dodge Intrepid. I have not had time to research trunk racks. Do the current versions allow you to open the trunk or do the bottom clamps need to contect under the rear bumpers? Thanks

I have a Rhodes that fits a Z28, and lifts with the trunk. It also fits my old escort wawon and raised with the rear door. I could even carry our tandem on it.

If you have a nice bike(s), you may want to think twice about using your bike as a rear bumper.
That's why I have a roof rack.

That's why I have a roof rack. That's why we have insurance on both the car AND the bikes (renter's insurance) if they get squished we get new (better) bikes. That and we don't have to deal with the decrease in gas mileage that comes from a permanently attached roof rack

Skuda25,

I recommend you take a look at the "Sportflite" model at www.draftmaster.com. I have an older version of this bike rack which was purchased about 10 years ago as the "Enflite". This rack rests very securely and neatly on top of the trunk lid. It enables you to mount two bikes upright like a roof rack but can installed and removed in a matter of minutes. This rack will work on nearly any car without a spoiler and also works with most vans and suv's. I feel the way this rack secures to a car is far superior to the type that hang off the bumper using multiple straps which allow the bike to bang against the car and each other. Good Luck

I use a Saris Bones two bike carrier. On the minivan it attaches to the hatch and allows me to open it without removing the rack. On my wife's Impala, which has a plastic strip along the bottom of the trunk lid, it has to hook to the bottom of the bumper, so the trunk cannot be opened. I figured the van was too high for a roof rack, and the Saris rack was much less expensive.

here in N/Zealand most cars have tow bars on the back(where else  )& a bike rack that fits on the tow ball is cheap to buy or easy to make if you can weld ! my car, a jap-crap import had no tow bar so i made one & bolted &plated it thro the trunk floor ,strong enough to take easily take the weight of one or two bikes but not strong enough to tow much ,so every 6mnths i have to take it off for its warrent of fittness inspection:mad:
