General Cycling Discussion - Sweaty?

It`s nice weather this week, so here comes the old sticky & smelly problem -> SWEAT!
At the end of my daily bike trip to the station, my body is floating, my face looks like the Niagara falls and people staring weird at me(i know i,m pretty but this...?)
Maybe a list of " Anti - Sweat - Gadgets " will give me a good idea.
I start off with, #1. - a travel towel,small enough for the backpack!

I know what you mean, toolfreak! That's the problem we commuting cyclists face: sweating among "nice" people.

I read somewhere that when you are cycling and you suddenly stop, you start pouring out sweat. Supposedly it has something to do with blood circulation.

MichaelW said that if you spend 5 minutes cooling down on the bike, giving your heart a chance to slow down, you won't have as big a problem with sweat. Sounds good to me.

But I am usually in a hurry and the towel you mentioned might be better for me!

ChrisL would say, "I am a cyclist, get over it!"

Personally, I love being covered in sweat.

The worst is if where you work is stuffy, hot, or even more gruesome, hot AND stuffy. It is almost impossible to cool off in this kind of situation. Fortunatly for me, one of the people in the Optometry clinic is pregnant, so she likes it really cold inside.

That's one advantage I had, too, when I was commuting to work. My boss liked it freezing inside and I often had to wear a sweater in July and August, in the office. My sweat evaporated really fast!

Since I work at a shop, lots of people commute. Not only is there bike storage, but there are showers and lockers too. I can ride hard on the way to work, and still not be stinky all day.

I dread the day that I take a desk job in a cubicle (no disrespect to those who've got one. You've all got something in you that I don't, cause I just couldn't do it. I'd crack up in there).

I agree, lightboy. I work construction where sweat and stink carry some prestige. I start the day at an advantage after a good hard commute.

I challenge anyone to beat me in a sweat contest...I literally get off the bike and soak the pavement/sidewalk.

I might have to take MichaelW's advice an slow down a little towards the end....even on cold days I seem to sweat buckets??

Glass of water anyone? :blush:

I read someplace--probably either Bicycling magazine or Runner's World or some book on running--that lots of sweat is a sign of fitness.

Though I suppose it could also mean, "Help, I'm dying of dehydration." :(

I think people realise when I collapse on the floor that it's not a good thng!!

That's right folks, I love sweat. We get plenty of hot humid days here, so I get plenty of chances to sweat. I even purposely drink more water than I need so that I can sweat even more. It is a very special feeling.

How do the other workers respond to your non-vehicular commute? I would think construction workers would be ruder then most about things like that.

I get kidded and teased a bit when I start a new job (big commercial jobs, usually lasting a year or more), but after a while, when they realize the time and money I'm saving and the fun I'm having, almost all express envy.
