General Cycling Discussion - Your choice- Night ride or the trainer?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

You are desperate to get in a couple extra miles. You gotten virtually zero miles in over one week. Looks like no time will be available unless you get on the trainer or go on a night ride. Outside weather is nice. Would you get on the tainer or go on a night ride.?

Night ride for sure - spend a lot of late hrs. coaching HS soccer in the fall - some late nights. Nothing like my commute home after midnight - Turbo Cats blazing - clear lens in my Oakelys - slight chill in the air. Some of my fondest riding memories are these night time rides.
Definately night ride. I look forward to them in fact. I got a trainer last year and swore I would use it. I made it a month, and I figure that's some kind of record. It's never even came out of it's little corner this year.

i hav`nt got a trainer but night riding is great , no traffic ,cool in the summer, you can take back the road @0400hrs. but it helps if you work shifts:)

Defo ride at night :D can't be bothered with trainers!! :D
I'll be the dissenting voice here.
At the times that I would go out, the traffic is not
exactly something that I want to play in. Sure I could
just doodle around the neighborhood but whats the use in
that.
I'd get on the rollers, pop in a TdF tape and spin away.
During the spring & Summer I won't look at the rollers, so
its a seasonal thing.

Another dissenter.
I work 9AM-6PM. It is very dark when I leave work. I drive during the winter months mainly because of this fact. I can tolerate the cold a little, regardless of what it says under my avatar. ;)
I don't want to ride for 14 miles in total darkness with all the nuts on the road. For some unknown reason they can't see my taillights, even though they are flashing. I have enough close calls during the day.
If I worked different hours I could ride two nights a week with a group (safety in numbers) but unfortunately their rides start at 6 and 6:30. :(
I've passed other group rides on my way home. It looks like fun.
In the mean time I'll ride on my CycleOps trainer and listen to my "special mix" of MP3s. :)

definitely the night joy ride. night = fewer cars on the street. nothing like flying down 7th avenue at night passing through times square lights getting WTF looks from tourists with glazed over eyes. pretty sweet to have central and prospect parks all to yourself also at 3am. . . you can cheat into the car lanes and own the whole road.
I've been out in the shop cleaning up, took a couple days off work to finish some things around the house after Christmas. Strange, but when I finally dug the trainer out from under a summer's worth of junk it didn't look so bad. With all this snow on the ground right now, maybe...

I just got a trainer for xmas... so maybe i'm still in the post holiday haze... so i'd have to go with it.. although night rides can be fun... they A-holes around my town can barely see me during the day.. forget about it at night.. too dangerous

well i have to go for trainer, after the experience of a cyclist on the wrong side of the road with no lights cycling in to me i've tended to keep my roadbike off the road during the night. Plus my lights no longer fit on my oversized handlebars. That and the continual threat of rain linked with no waterproof clothing quite often keep me indoors :(

night ride only because I am able to do it fairly safely where I live. Although riding the trainer is not such a bad option IMHO.

There is no choice in my opinion. A trainer is training not riding, IMHO, no soul involved there. It's night ride or no ride for me. In the winter I work till dark daily, then head out for a ride 2-3 nights per week.

both!.. if its a clear night, no snow and ice(i live in a big city) i head out towards the lake for a nice breezy ride.. if its like it was christmas day... i run and go on the trainer for about an hour(if i can bear it)...
weekends are 98% day rides..outside, starting in dark but wow..love sunrise.

I will always vote for outside riding over inside training

Night ride all the way. You do not have look at a wall or tv and you get to be out side.
Even if you ride a trail that you know like the back of you hand, riding at night makes it very different.
