A wheel is comprised of a hub, spokes, spoke nipples and a rim. Narrow the focus of your question and you might find your answer.

Hi,
how much do you weigh, and do you do lite touring or the Winnebago-on-two-wheels kind of touring?
I do lite touring and prefer Shimano road hubs and Mavic CXP33 rims.

I use both wheels, but the rear tire wears out more quickly so I guess I use that wheel most. :)

i am curious what brand, model, etc. of wheel people use in the 700c size?
do you buy one ready made?

Depends on what I am using them for, I currently have 3 bikes with 700c wheels on them. Tour/Commuter has Shimano Deore LX hubs with Araya VX400 with 35C tires, Old road bike has Suntour Superbe with Mavic rims at one point it had Fiamme Red Lables on it, the "townie" has a Sturmey Archer alloy 3sp with coaster brake and a no name hub on the front running on Sun rims. The Tour/Commuter wheels are what came on the bike, the old road bike wheels were built for me, the townie wheels I built. Those are all of the 700c wheels that I currently have that are in use. Wanna ask about the 26":D ;)

Some excellent, very strong and durable 700c rims for touring are the Salsa Delgado Cross (Delgado-X) and the Velocity Dyad. Both are available in 36 hole, and I think that at least the Velocity is available in a 40 as well. If you can afford them, I might suggest you go with Phil Wood or Chris King hubs. I'm told that butted spokes are actually stronger than straight guage, which seems kind of counter intuitive. The first name in wheelbuilders in the US may be Peter White -- peterwhitecycles.com -- check out the website for good info and a fast education on wheel issues.

Components are less important than how they are assembled, I have some LX hubs, Alex 36h rims, spokes, and Schwalbe marathon slicks that have dealt admirably with my touring loads. If I was buying the parts I would probably upgrade the hubs and rims. My next wheels are goign to have Phil or DT hubs, and some MA2 36 h rims I have lying around, though these are 26".
