Bicycle Mechanics - Derailleur upgrade

I have a Lemond Reno road bike that I use for commuting, at least when the weather allows which is not as often as I would like in NH. The rear derailleur (Shimano 105) snapped recently and even though it is supposedly under warranty, Lemod is playing the obviously-been-abused ploy. I'm not here to rant and rave about the ethic of Lemond, the policy of this message board prevents me from adequately describing them.

Now that I need to replace the derailleur I thought it would be a good opportunity to upgrade. Anyone have any suggestions? Is it worth upgrading on this type of bike? If I do upgrade would I need to upgrade the front derailleur (105 triple) as well, or any other components?

I wouldn't bother (esp. the front). You won't notice a huge difference between 105 and Ultegra.

Your warranty claim is with Shimano, not LeMond. As barba noted, you won't notice much difference (aka none) between the 105 and an Ultegra FD.

Actually, the claim would be handled through Trek, Lemond's parent company if the part was oe(believe it is) and it's with a year of purchase from the dealer. But your claim will be vetted by the dealer first who hears the jra cliche all the time(as in, "I was just riding along when(insert story here)"...)

If all you are using the bike for is commuting, I wouldn't bother going any higher than 105 either as mentioned above. I am actually in the process of building a new commuter with 9 speed 105 myself.
