What's the reasoning here? What's to stop the entire linkage system rocking backwards?

perhaps I'm being a little revealing here, but I think you have to have a good reason to stray from tried and tested design. Particularly with complex things. I fail to see the reason here. I do, however, see a heap of extra pivots (therefore bearings, therefore failure points) and linkages (therefore flex, therefore weight to combat flex) over designs on the market today (and working fine by all accounts).

I think it's good to try and design your own stuff though, don't stop. Just make sure you have the right thing before you take it to a builder.
