Mountain Biking - Sram/Shimano front derailleur compatibility

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Are X-7 Sram thumb shifters compatible with Shimano front derailleurs? I know that with rear derailleurs Sram X-7 are 1:1 and Shimano 2:1, but is that also true for the front? I assumed they were incompatible, but then I noticed bikes such as the Cannondale Adventure Headshock use X-7s with a Deore front derailleur.
I'd like to use a Shimano 105 front mech with an X-7, so I can use a 52tooth triple crankset on my commuting bike (Specialized Sequoia, flat handlbars) which the Sram X-Gen front derailleur won't accommodate (44tooth max).
Answers appreciated - the bozos down my London Islington local bike shop argued amongst themselves.

yes, it'll work.
caveat: depending on how much smaller your middle ring is, you may have problems shifting up/down. too large a tooth difference can sometimes cause issues here.
but the basic question of sram shifter pulling cable for a shimano front mechis easy; it'll work fine. just make sure whichever one you get, that it's double or triple ring useable, depending on what setup you're running.

Bought the 105 front mech. Fitted it with X-7 shifter, and works fine. thanks!
Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I just posted on the mech forum about my problems using an x.7 trigger shifter with an Ultegra FD, and was told they were incompatible! (i.e. SRAM trig shifters not compatible with Shimano road FDs)
Is there some inherent difference between the 105 and the Ultegra FD's that allows the 105 to work OK? Surely they pull have the same pull? Is there a difference between 9 and 10 speed at work here?
realcharles, I would be interested in hearing how this setup is working for you...what chainring config are you running?
