I have an older (1986) KHS roadie with a six speed rear and 53/39 (I think) front. Suntour SS derailleur and Sugino VP cranks, if that helps. The chain has an "M" on each of the plates, but that seems to be the only identifying mark. I want to remove the chain but am trying to figure out:
(A) whether I can replace the link with the SRAM Power Link for 8 speed chains (or is there another version/brand that does the same thing)?
(B) what pins I should use if I don't use something like a Power Link.

why not just use a chain tool? when you use a chain tool, you dont remove the pin all the way, just enough to get the chain apart. you then use the same pin to put the chain back together. in order to unstiffen the resulting stiff link, you just wiggle the chain laterally and apply lube

I was under the impression you always replace pins when disconnecting the chain. You can re-use? You're saying push it out so that it's still connected to the inner plate?

So are you saying I need to buy a new chain? How can I tell what links I need, or as generic says, just re-use the same link?

right, but to the outer plate (male part) of the link. You cant push the pin back in once its out, but if you dont take it all the way out, you're golden. Just fix the inevitable stiff link when you put it back together
