Mountain Biking - Chain rubbing against front derailleur on highest gear... normal?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just got a Rockhopper Comp Disc and something bothered me today, on the highest gear the chain rubs againts the front derailleur but it also rubs in when in the 8th, 7th and 6th gear, it doesn´t affect performance (seemingly) but the grinding noise is nerve-wrecking, is this normal or does the front derailleur needs adjustment? Also, the 9th gear takes some time and effort to kick in, should I adjust the rear derailleur too?
Thanks.

if its pretty new, bring it back to your LBS and get them to adjust your derailleurs as the shifter cables have probably stretched a little.
Also, do a search on "cross chaining" that will answer a few of your questions...

yep...
You might be able to fix it with a few turns on the adjusting knob on the shifter.
you can take back to LBS, I do agree if it's new they shud have given it to you set up correctly - but you will at some point need to learn how to adjust yr mechs, if you don't want to go to the LBS often...
it is pretty easy and you will get satisfaction fm doing it yourself - go to park tool website & follow the instructions step by step.....

Chone - I just got the same bike Saturday, and it does the same thing.... Just haven't taken the time to look at it - maybe tonight..... Should be an easy fix.
