http://nycbikemaps.com is a new google maps mashup of all of New York City's bike lanes, bike paths, & greenways. It is presently a work in progress, but already has almost every bike lane, bike path, & greenway plotted.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions on ways to improve it. thanks

Nice touch adding the "Seven Sisters" a.k.a. "River Road" route in NJ.
I think a map that showed the street condition (smooth, cracked, potholed, Kinshasa) by colour code would be more useful for planning city routes
Neat idea, but that would also be virtually impossible for "one guy coding" to maintain.
Edit: Some sort of Wiki-style editing by users WOULD work, IMO. bikemap guy, what do you think? Can it be done?
This is cool. I wish it showed the greenroute entrances and exits in more detail.
Nice, where'd you get all the data from?
I didn't know about GPS Visualizer, I thought you needed to really know Java to get a Google API to work
obeguy- excluding River Road would just have been wrong . more routes & rides outside of the city will be added later.
andrewP- that certainly would be great for planning routes, but would only be possible through a wiki or something with the D.O.T.'s data.
bennyk- adding greenway access points is at the top of list & will be added soon.
jerseysbest-
Routes were plotted using one or more of the methods by
-Riding the route with a GPS device recording the route.
-Viewing & tracing the routes via satellite imagery in google earth & converting to for use on the web
-data for routes i am not personally familiar with came from the NYC.gov - Bike Maps
some very basic java script & html is needed, but sites like gpsvisualizer.com make it much simpler.
NYCBikeMaps.com To Do List:
* directional indication for one-way bike lanes
* add locations of greenway access points
* add search function to recenter the map user supplied address
* separate map of geotagged images of bike lanes & bike paths. working on it: http://www.nycbikemaps.com/pictures_nycbikemaps/map.htm
* add notes for special circumstances (stairs, detours, & construction)
* location of bike shops
* public restrooms near bike routes
* subway & train stations near bike routes (this could be difficult)
* adding elevation data
* Printer friendly version ( routes do not print presently & I don't know why not)

What's your source for pictures? (you?)
What's your source for pictures? (you?)
this is something we could all help with
presently i am the only source for pictures, but am exploring using flickr for the picture map.
Thanks again for all the comments.
Much like New York City's bike infrastructure, this site needs improvement. There are issues to fix, features to add, & a whole lot of QA before this site is complete. I will turn to you all often for feedback, so thank you in advance.
If anyone would like to contribute pictures, particulary geotagged pics of bike lanes & bike paths, you can do so on flicker by adding them to this group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/nycbikemaps/
In other news, a map of the 5 Boro Bike Tour has been added, but is obviously not for use navigating the city since it is a closed road that goes on several highways.

This seems to really bog down my browser- Firefox 1.5.0.3 anyone else experiencing this?
This seems to really bog down my browser- Firefox 1.5.0.3 anyone else experiencing this?
there have been a number of people who have pointed out that the website is a bit of a memory hog. Google maps had a rather substaintial memory leak issue with IE & to a lesser extent firefox, which they recently released documentation on how to fix. I have taken there suggestions, but still find that it can hog computer resources. There are more than 5,000 geographic points used to make the map and serving them to a web browser seems to be the biggest cause of performance issues. I am exploring new ways to serve them, but would gladly take any suggestion from those with some knowledge of the google mapd api.
http://www.nycbikemaps.com still needs a lot of work & unfortunately my day job is hogging most of my time (not to mention my desire to getout & ride), but I appreciate all the comments & suggestions.
thanks again,
