Classic & Vintage - Stupid Schwinn People!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

And now, from the creators of Numbskull Of The Day we bring to you the most idiotic and stupid things ever reported done by Schwinn Stingray and Krate (amongst other models) collectors.
WARNING: This, as you might expect, involves linking to the Schwinn forum.
(mods, consider this to be stickied, at your discretion.)
As our first display of stupidity, we bring you the burning-at-the-stake of an all-original 1964 "shorty" Stingray:

Enjoy...or cry...
Take care,

What a tool. I'm glad you gave him a blast of s*@! for it. I love the "they still make Schwinns" comment. Well, yeah, Chevy still makes Vettes, but I don't see anyone yearning to roast a Polo White 53 anytime soon.

I hate when old bikes are ruined, especially for a stupid reason. Personally I dont like stingrays really, but you know a lot of people do, so bleh.
reminds me of how I felt when I saw this:

An old tank frame JC higgins ballooner destroyed for the stupidest thing possible.

I just don't get it. Why do that to a bike? If you don't want it, someone does, and if all else fails, I'm sure there is a worthy charity that you can donate it to. What a waste....!:(

A Committal for a Cremated Schwinn
Go in peace vintage Schwinn,
for blessed is the Stingray
that burns at the hands of a fool.
It shall rest from its many rides,
and the enjoyment it gave,
shall follow it forever.
We commit its ashes to this final resting place.
Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
Amen.

A fool cannot create something to impress people, so they must resort to something much easier - destroying something to shock people. It's usually best just to ignore such fools; once they realize they're not getting the attention they crave by, say, burning bikes, they usually turn to something else which will have them end up in jail. Their cell mate Bubba will ensure they get theirs. ;)

My first reaction was anger and perhaps a bit of childish name calling. Now I'm left with "Why?". Is this related to some of those alternative, sub-culture groups who take hacksaws and torches to vintage lightweights in order to make tall bikes or flimsy pedicabs? You know the clubs I'm talkin about. Sure dressing up in silly costumes is fun but so is having a job and moving out of grandmas house before age 40.

I wouldn't be too hard on the chopper crowd - at least they create something in the long run.
This Schwinn incident, however, is destruction.

P.S.: If possible, I don't want this thread to become only a post regarding this '64 Lime Stingray. If you have any other links to Schwinn folk doing stupid things, such as pricing a Raleigh at $250, perhaps, or maybe a photo of a pile of VLWs rotting next to beautiful Schwinns, post 'em.

I wasn't too serious. Well, maybe about living with grandma and not having a job...:D

Heh, yea.
I sure hope next week will be better...and for the sake of everyone, I hope I have something overwhelmingly positive to report, for a change.

The guy's just a garden-variety snot nosed punk, spending mommy and daddy's money at college. <sigh> I guess Ann Arbor ain't what it used to be.

Looks like whatever they really burned had a front fender, whereas the Lime Sting Ray didn't. I used to have one of those, a 63 or 64 and I loved it.

- dunno 'bout that - have you been over in the advocacy or car-free forums here lately?
:-)
p.s. somehow i missed the stingray thing, although i was in the age group...
According to page 3, they burned some old Columbia POS, not the Schwinn. However, given the toxicity of burning paint and tires, and the possibility that a poor kid somewhere could have ridden and enjoyed the bike, it still strikes me as a pretty stupid stunt.

I agree.
The only thing suitable for burning would have been a Royce Union.
