Mountain Biking - Stans No Tubes... am I missing something ???
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Tried to set up no tubes with a Stans kit - followed the instructions and failed.....
Now I know plenty of others who use this succesfully, but I am still finding it hard to accept that Soapy Water actually seals the tire wall to the rim.....! someone tell me it does because I cannot get it to work.
Seems I need to be able to inflate the tire using only soapy water and the sealant is only used to seal smaller holes inside the tire.
Can a tire sealed with only soapy water withstand the forces of riding and stay sealed ?
Anyone have similar problems with this or have any tips..... ?
Soapy water only acts as a lubricant, it doesn't have anything to do with sealing. It helps the bead of the tire seated easier on the rim. I personally don't use soapy water, because it gets messy.
First try to inflate the tire to see if it seats properly, you will hear pops as the tire inflates. There will be lots of leaks at this point, both from the sidewalls and from between the tire and the rim. It's ok, but make sure you can inflate to about 60 psi.
Then you can deflate the tire, pour the stan's sealant in, and inflate again. The sealant will seal the small leaks on the sidewall. You just need to shake the wheel until they are all sealed.
If the tire is new, and you can't inflate it, try inflating with a tube first, and leaving it like that for a few hours. That will stretch the tire which makes it easier to inflate tubeless.
are you using an air compressor?
that helps with regular tubeless for some.
I have no experience with regular tires and stans, but I would assume it would help with that also.
they are brand new tires, I wondered if it could be that - I will inflate some tubes in them and leave them to stretch a while & I will try without the soapy water & see if it works with the sealant alone.
