I am looking at getting a new set of race wheels.

I am looking at something I can use in TT/ti and or road races. I already have a disk, so I am looking for a wheelset that is about 40mm deep(deepest by UCI rules). Or a really good deal an a deep dish front wheel.

That said, anyone know any good online dealers that have cheap prices. Or a local dealer you know of with cheap prices that will ship to Canada?

*I usually support my LBS, but with the current state of our dollar(extremley strong) it will cost close to double to buy local.......

-EDIT- I have been looking at Mavic Cosmic Carbones or Hed Stinger 50's. something like that....

As I said in a different post, I just got some 2005 303s for an amazing deal. Took them out today and I am still amazed at how light and stiff they are. They feel faster than my Tillium up front ever did which was 45mm deep.

2005, 303s can be had cheap right now if you look around, under $1000. Mavic's are overpriced in my book, great hubs on a heavy wheel. Hed gets good reviews, but my LBS said choosing Alps over the 303s for the same price was ridiculous.

Is your disc clincher or tubular?

Disk is a clincher, but I can get a new one if I can get a good deal on some tubulars.

Well if you look at tubulars, then Hed Stingers or Zipps make more sense than the Alps for weight reasons, but you'll have the issue of carbon braking surface.

If you get clinchers to reduce the hastle on you, then Alps make a lot of sense but Zipps don't.

the stinger 50's and the carbones are both deeper than 40mm, is that really the limit on wheels?

I think that is the limit, maby its 50. I know the pro peleton uses Carbones.......

gottaridebikes.com has a fantastic 20% discount for first orders including free shipping. I just got a new set of Zipp 404s from them for $1400 which beat the eBay prices. As an aside, I run the Zipp 999 wheelset for time trialing and love Zipp wheels. I was looking for some fast wheels for my road bike that could be substituted for time trialing on very windy days where disk wheels can be a bit unsafe.

I recently took the 404's off my tri bike and ran them in a crit race(never did it previously because I heard there are lots of crashes in crits) and oh how nice they feel, kinda makes me want to use them all the time.

As for UCI regulations, approved wheels for mass start events is not limited by rim depth. Any wheel is classed as non standard if rim depth is greater than 25mm, or has fewer than 16 spokes or spoke thickness over 2.4mm.

All wheels outside the definition of a standard wheel only need to pass a rupture test.

See the below link for a list of non standard wheels that have passed the rupture test and are approved (as of 20th October 2005). Note it includes Zipp 808's which are far deeper than 40 or 50mm...

if you are not limited to 40mm then go 404s, they look fast just sitting there

I was talking with a friend of mine, and I may buy his wheels from him.

2005 Zipp 404. Campy hubs, i forget the spokes, they were built by a master wheel builder in callifornia. It has a power tap too. A fantastic set of wheels, so I think I may pick them up.

I also ride the simular Zipp version...Zipp Z999's and for the same reason purchased a Z606 set so I can have various set-ups depending on wind conditions; Z999, Z909, Z808 and Z606...although I have ridden the Z999's on a windy day for my weekly TT and am gaining confidence with the deep dish front wheel compaired to the 404 clinchers I have. Given the choice I think the 606 set offers the best aero set-up along with the safest in windy days. I also would like to try the 606's on my road bike when I get time - which, like you was another reason for getting the 606's.

I think so, I didnt look too close.

Well my only problem right now with them(they are beutiful wheels), is that the power tap is campy compatible(i run shimano 9 and 10speed drivetrains now). I emailed sheldon brown(came accross his website searching for an answer to this problem), and he said that I can just just use the corresponding campy cassette, so 9 for 9, or 10 for 10. He said it will work ok, I will see what the cost of buying a new feehub and replacing it is vs. 2 new cassettes(9 and 10speed)

Zipp 404s are definitely UCI legal (CSC used them in the TDF last year) I've done a number of crits and road races with a set of Zipp 404's , with a power tap hub.

the problem with going to a new free hub is that you'd be giving up the power tap, worth about a thousand bucks. Why not just use the Jtek shift adapter so you can run a campy cassette with a D/A shifter.

Well I was told there is some kind of freehub adapter so you could put a shimano cassette on a campy hub. Link to the jtek?

What I'm familiar with in putting shimano cassettes on campy hubs, requires a rebuild of the free hub, and I'm guessing that doesn't work on power taps. See http://www.velonews.com/tech/report/articles/9817.0.html There are some aftermarket cassettes designed to fit on campy hubs with Shimano spacing between the cogs.

Ok, so it will cost me 60 bucks to replace the freehub body. So that is what I will do.

Wheels;
Rear
2005 Zipp 404 Clincer(dimpled ones)
36x sapim aero spokes(was told some of the best spokes)
Powertap SL Hub

Front
zipp 404
32x sapim aero spokes
record hub

Both wheels built by Steve Gravenites(apparently one of the best wheel builders?)

So I got these wheels, still waiting on the freehub body so I can ride the rear. I threw the front on paired with my disk.....freaking awesome, I dont know if I was actually or not, but I felt so much faster......
