well...here's the lowdown, i live in Long Beach, CA and I'm a photographer sans car....after trying out a few trailers, I had an xtracycle installed on my bike...best thing i could have done because it has made it possible for me to bring my lighting gear without pulling a trailer through traffic...

southern california roads and drivers don't get along well with bicycles, but i've decided that i'm going to make it happen...

yesterday, i had a job in garden grove where I was meeting the writer at a tattoo parlor for a shoot with the owner for a magazine....it was about 28 miles roundtrip carrying a backpack full of photo gear on one side and a light stand, soft box and umbrella on the other....

today, i had a job in harbor city, about 30 round trip...this time, i took my backpack with the camera, a small portable strobe kit, 3 lightstands and a tripod, umbrella, softbox, reflector, reflector holder....the ride was scary in some parts...i took the LA river trail north for 5 miles and turned off of willow which put me in the heart of the industrial part of town with refineries and semi's barreling past me at 45 mph...

anyways, i survived and i have to say i'm pretty proud of myself...i've been bike commuting for the last year, but never with that much gear at those distances through LA traffic....i'm trying to put together a really lightweight kit now that will shed some pounds of my cargo....

amazingly, during both rides I didn't get a single horn honk or a get off the road yelled at me...maybe it was because of a very full looking xtracycle or perhaps the rising gas prices have changed people's opinions of bike commuting....

Truckers, it seems to me, are sometimes the best drivers to deal with. Not always, but often.

I know a guy here with an Extracycle, and he let me ride it. It's an impressive setup. I was surprised that the handling was so good.

Congrats on your determination and success.

Maybe it's just me, but I find it absolutely inexcusable for a professional photographer to post about such a cool setup yet include NO PICTURE??? If there is no pic soon, we must determine an appropriate penance... :D

What is your plan to "crash proof" your gear to keep you in business??

It's only a matter of time before every cyclist crashes , mate. :o :o

I was going to say the same. You'd best make sure you crash-proof the gear and check that some insurance of yours covers the inevitable damage from the inevitable crash.

Edit: not to poop on your parade, though, because I think it's really cool that you're doing this, OP.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

xcapekey, congrats.( I am in Indonesia, tangerang)
I am a photographer myself, have been commuting by bike for more than a year now.
when I only have to carry my camera bag, so far I think I am quite succesful,
By putting my gear an a rack, and some rubber straps.
I have , though, carried some studio lamps, light stands, along with the camera bag.
All that hanging at the sides of a the rack.

But hearing from you, I think I must have the urge to buy myself an xtracycle.
seems very logical.

hey, let us see some photos of the set up.

Impressive. Don't know what an xtracycle is. I probably would have gone for a one wheeled trailer. You see pictures of them sometimes in the car-free forum. Seems more efficient than the two wheeled kid carrier ones. Also a slimmer profile which would help in curb hugging on high speed roads or not taking the whole bike trail.

No recommendations regarding companies, but make sure you disclose to them that the equipment is used for business purposes. It will cost more, and they may not cover under renter's insurance at all, but if you don't and they find out after an incident you won't be covered anyway...

A good quality camera bag is all you need. Pro gear isn't that fragile! Have you seen how photo-journalists bang their equipment around?

I've been a cycling photographer for a few years now, really gets people's attention! I use a Lowepro backpack for the camera gear (1 or 2 bodies, 2-5 lenses, small flash and quantum battery). A Wike flatbed fits the studio kit when I need it (2 monolights, 4 stands, backdrops, etc).

I made it part of my sales pitch, "environmentally responsible photography".
