General Cycling Discussion - How often do you purchase a new bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Personally, if it was up to me, I'd be getting a new bike every 2 months but my wallet only allows for one every year :P. Nah I always want a new bike. But who here actually gets to know there bike? and who here purchases a new one all the time?

BTW, I got 2 road bikes this years. 1 mountain bike last year, and 1 mountain bike this year.

I haven't had a new bike since '97. I guess I'm due.

I have only ever owned one real mtb.

If I had my way I would buy once a year :D That would allow me to get the newest all the time.

I have bought only one new bike -- a 1971 Nishiki Competition, which I rode for 20 years / 40K miles/65K km, until the bottom bracket shell cracked. Everything I currently ride, spanning model years 1959 to 1988, is a yard sale special.

Usually every two years but depends on the bike I have had this one for three years and it is in desperate need of replacing :D but this is the first time in 5 years that I have been out of work for so long :( just trying to do a work based qualification then when I get it in about a months time roll on new bike!!!

Won't be able to go too mad though I saw a low range Giant road bike for around 500 pound but if not that a light alu/titanium Giant mountain bike with road tyres and a few other cons will do me at the moment!!! :p

Last Bike I bought was an '89 Specialized Sequoia it is my present commuter bike. Before that was an '83 Bianchi San Remo, which is my road bike (presently in pieces through out the house as I try to re build a 20 year old bike) I have a '01 Bianchi Grizzly on lay away which will be an addition to my commuter bikes (2 one for good weather one for bad) and add another dimension to my recreational biking (off road) when I am done paying that off I am going to by another road bike I have my eye on a Bianchi Eros steel frame and a longer wheel base for comfort on those long rides I like to do. Then it probably will be at least another 10 years before I buy another. I try to buy quality and hold on to them for as long as I can (stereo 22 years, ,TV 12 yrs, VCR 10 yrs etc etc)

Oct 01 bought a Concept rigid MTB for general commuting purposes, then got into cycling

Sept 02 moved to US and needed new commuter, picked up a univega sportour from the 80's with shimano 600. This gave me some extra speed and cemented my decision to get a full on racer.

November 02 spent most of my studdent loan getting a cannondale r1000

November 02 found a dirt cheap 1994 Trek 370 in perfect condition which I used to replace the univega which is now for sale

Technically I own five bikes on two continents but as two are for sale it's not so bad, the only worrying thing is the exponential rate that my bike buying seems to be increasing at...

Has anyone heard of Road One bikes??? I think that is right half asleep here and are they any good???? I saw them a while back in the local bike dealers and they were quite expensive but not sure where the brand originates from!! :D

Giant_racer:

yeah i reckon so, i looked at the bikeshop here in the uk, and a cannondale here was £1700 instead of $2100(+tax), £1700X1.5($/£) = $2550 so yeah they can be cheaper particularly if you get discount on top of that :P

course the flipside is that everything that is european is usually more expensive and i'd say clothing is generally about the same. I dunno, like a lot of things you might initially think you get a better deal out here but it all evens out in the end, medical insurance, books, food (in supermarkets) etc all add up, swings and roundabouts i guess

Seems like I buy two bikes about every 4 years.
I might do better to buy one bike every two years hu?
Never really thought about it.

This year I bought a Trek 1000 to use as a winter bike,
and a Klein Quantum,, just to use!
:D

march 98 and April 27, 2002. I generally don't buy new bikes all that often, although I generally spend just as much $ maintaining the current ones. It's just that I find it hard to give up an older bike when I've been through a lot with it (the emotional attachment), so I just replace components as they wear out.

P.S. I generally ride around 20,000km a year making no attempt to avoid things like rain and hail, so that should give you an idea of how much wear I get out of things.

I haven't purchased a "new" bike in 8 years. On average, I purchase a new-to-me bike every year.

My cherished Ross road bike is 18 years old, but still looks and rides like new. If the bike industry depended on me, they'd go broke! :)

My problem with bikes, I don't get rid of them.. Each bike is different and gets used at different types of rides..
I first bought a Nishiki Sport in 1991- this is sort of a utility/about town errands type of bike- also gets used when it rains because of the wider tires. Also meant to be my wife's bike, if only she would use it..Wanted her to have it for stabilty. 2- Bought a 1994 Scott 5200 road bike. This was my first serious road bike.. Been on 4 overseas bike tours. Without getting out my mileage logs- has to have 35,000 miles on it.. Almost everything has been changed out but the bottom bracket.. Use it when I want a road bike but with some carrying capacity- since it has a rear rack. have commuted to work on it. Take it out when don't want to get my best road bike dirty.
3- My pride and joy.. Fall, 2000, I bought a Klein Quantum Pro..My Sunday bike, I take out for days I feel fast or to ride with the pack.... Never would mud be splashed about its gears. 4- My passion is touring. Early 2001, I bought a Fuji Touring bike.. It has front/back panniers if needed.. Use it for touring and commuting to work..
When I do a serious tour- like crossing the US- I wonder if I might want to upgrade my touring bike. Of course, I hope that new touring bike would be compatible for my wife- because I bug her constantly to ride the Mer to Mar ride across the South of France with me.. So, then we will really need a second touring bike..
