Hi
I've just bought a giant simple 3 cruiser it has a nexus 3 speed hub and yesterday I was screaming down a long hill and towards the end when I started to break it was really noisey. It was a loud high pitch squeaky noise.
Is this normal?
Do/can these kind of brakes fail?
I'm going to go to the sheldon web site to see how these brakes work.
Everything can/does fail.
Hopefully all you did was overheat the brake and boil out the lube. If so you should be able to re-pack it and go on your merry way.
There are all sorts of little fiddley bits inside a nexus hub. If you have any doubts about your ability to work on one, take it to a dealer. It is also important to use the right lube.

Oh, they can fail... Especially if your chain tends to fall off
(just got an Electra Rat Rod with Nexus 3, loosely assembled by an lbs)

So is the loud noise that I heard normal?
It is normal for a coaster hub with something wrong with it to make a loud noise, yes.
