The back of my leg, right below my butt check on my left leg has been sore since I completed a century over rolling hills two weeks ago.

I’ll admit, my recovery probably wasn’t as long as it should have been – 2 days off the bike – but I have put in two periods of 2-3 days since then as well.

I did race two days (a crit and RR with two 300-400 foot hills) in the week after, but I have cut back my time on the bike a lot since then.

It’s not that painful per say, but depending on how I flex my body (like turning around, etc) I can feel it. I don’t think it’s a muscle that’s sore, I think it may be a bone, but im not sure which one.

I think the best course of action is to take off a week or so from the bike, but I find that hard to do. the longest I did was 3 days and that was not enough to cure the problem.

Does anyone have any idea what the issue is? Which is more likey, a bone or a muscle? If this doesn’t clear up within a few weeks I will see a doctor but in the meantime, I’d prefer not to. It doesn’t affect my cycling per-se, I can still ride hard, and as often as before, but I certainly notice it when I wake up in the morning.

Any insight would be helpful.

If I understand the issue, it sounds like your hamstrings. We tend to use quads more in cycling, which then creates an inbalance between the pair, (quads and hammies being opposing muscle groups) which is often my problem. I do hamstring curls at the gym once or twice a week to even this out. Try this: if you can do quad lifts with 40 pounds (or whatever works for you) but only manage 10 with hamstring curls, there is an inbalance!
