Is anyone else seeing the new ads right in the middle of the page? What the hell. I know, I know...its "only" $20. Just pay it if you use it. blah, blah, blah...I was drawn to this site becuase the immense amount of free and useful info. I plan on upgrading when I have the money but I don't know...these new ads seem a little extreme. Maybe I'm just being silly.

Breaks up the clean and beautiful design of the site though, don't it?

Yes, you are being silly.

But, on a more serious and important note, how is the recovery going from your injuries? Get a new bike?

I'll get a red star someday, too poor right now and all my spare moolah goes to a few things with way less in the bank. $25? ain't bad, but i wouldn't do it for ad removal, just to support.

I'm not sure what is worse, the ad or that it's advertizing fixed gear conversion for cheap.

Just turn off Java, and you can't see them. Or Javascript, I forget which

Dangnabbit! You can't get anything good for free anymore. Even the CrackerJack prizes suck these days. Temporary tattoos? What the ****?

They're relevant ads. they help pay the bills. There are no pop-ups or flash ads. I think they have taken a very classy path to advertising so I am not going to hate on it.

I don't have $20 for bike parts let alone bike forums.

Sorry guys, I have to pay the bills to host and run this site. *shrug*

Stitches have been out for awhile and though it could be a lot worse I have few battle scars. I have had four root canals, a build up and four crowns. I go back to the dentst on the 11th for the permanent crowns. So far about 13 hours in the dentist office. I am riding a track bike that I had previous to the accident right now and am still working on getting $$$ from insurance so...

I read an article somewhere about the benefits of letting people use adblocks (more specifically desigining your site so they are easy to block, or at least not a pain in the ass to block). They realization is that the people who use adblockers aren't going to click on the ads anyways, so why piss them off?

Feel free to block the ads. There is nothing I can do to stop you.

With out the advertisments, I can't pay the hosting bill. If I can't pay the hosting bill, the site will close down. For the last 6 years, I have ran the site with little or no ads, for years I paid for hosting out of pocket, I simply can't afford to pay $10,000.000 a year out of pocket to host this site.

The ads are fine.
they're not obnoxious. they don't pop up, play music or hover over the stuff you want to read.
how hard is it to scroll the page an extra inch?

Joe, how could I hate? Without bikeforums I'd've never known about Phil Wood, Kierin, Pies, Sparks or how much my hatred of smarmy track bikes is mirrored by people all over the globe. I'm gonna click on some ads just out of love.

Joe Gardner

Please don't! The performance bike ads are affiliate links, I make 5% of each order when you buy after clicking on a link. The google ads are paid per click, but clicking just out of love can get the account closed.

Glad you enjoy the site. :)

I was about to write a reply saying that you should have a list of all the affiliate links so when shopping we can support the site, then I saw the "Shop (http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?f=224)" link at the top of the page. Maybe you should have that mentioned in the red star ad, so that people notice it. I'll definitely use the links in Shop from now on, I just never noticed them before.

Must burn your ass to have people complain about site performance and then complain about ads, huh?

Yeah, I never noticed the Shop link either so powerful are my self-editing abilities. And me in the mood to buy more stuff...

on a positive note the site is WAY snappier now than I've ever seen it before. It's way faster ignoring big ugly ads than it was waiting for pages to load.

SamHouston
05-03-06, 09:03 PM
eh, I never noticed the "link to us" thing in the thing, I guess I'll do that, cheapneasy support for a good site. I'm just not a link chaser so it never occurs to me to put em up much. Tomorrow for now is sleep.

seriously, running this site seems to be a pretty thankless jobs. people ***** about your censoring policies, performance problems, ads...

it's simple. ya don't like the ads, pay $20 ****ing dollars! it's not much, especially for those of you with THOUSANDS of posts. this site is HUGE and i'm sure costs a bundle to maintain. don't be a leech.

I ended up buying a pair of bike shorts and gloves via an ad for performance. Damn ads!

dolface
05-03-06, 09:52 PM
and if you can't afford the $25, next time you buy something from one of the companies that advertise here, do it by following the link so joe (and the site) get a cut.

I did... I even said I did in my post. Infact the entire time I haven't said anything against the ads. So I am confused as to why I am the one who is being talked about...

the shop thing is good. the consensus seems to be that it needs to be more prominent. I'll get a red star as soon as I start living off of a job instead of government loans.
