View Full Version : Chain tug for axles used with freehubs

Most chain tugs are designed for BMX bikes and don't have to accommodate a derailleur hanger. I've been using star washers on my DT FS to help keep high pedal torque from pulling the axle out of the (horizontal) dropouts. Not an ideal solution. Does anyone know of a chain tug that works if there's a derailleur hanger on the right dropout?

Forward facing horizontal dropouts, right?

You might want to contact this guy (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mwaters/17287715/).

Or here (http://www.bikefanatic.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/63/products_id/926?osCsid=73216f2aa5e627f6ee84d1955d383daf) might be another option?

Thanks, spambait. Yes, the DT FS has foward facing dropouts. The problem is the derailleur hanger. The AU 60.00 tugs on the bike fanatic site would probably work. Too bad the detail page is non-op. I wonder if there is a US source.

Your source (http://www.greasycomb.com/catalogweb/pages/GCD31-32.htm), good sir, straight out of La Habra, CA (http://www.greasycomb.com/pages/contact.htm).

Now if only it works...

spambait thanks very much for the research. I'll call GCD in the a.m. and ask if they think it will work. What a catalog ... !

I called GCD. The tug is for Revell frames, which have a rear facing dropout. Oh well. The star washers are working OK, but they do chew up paint and aluminum.

If you were on a fixed gear, I'd understand. I'm just amazed at the torque you're getting!

Maybe just good ol' blue loctite? At least that's tried and true. ;)

Well, with star washers I can remove the wheel to fix a flat. Could come in handy.

I've found neither Blue nor Red will completely seize your bolts; you can still use an adjustable wrench or socket wrench w/o a heating source (I'm sure you carry one wrench or the other or even both with you).

JB Weld, on the other hand, WILL make your wheel one with the bike...
