Commuting - How can you get yur dawg to stay on the bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have four dawgs, all ill mannered mutts. Not vicious, just ill mannered. I think it would be neat if I could buy one of those bike trailers, and take them out one at a time on a ride. But I'm afraid as soon as they see a squirrel or another dog, they'll jump out and go after him. Do any of you take your dawg out for a ride -- on your rack or in a trailer? Do you tie him to the bike? If so, would he strangle himself if he jumped? How does it go for you?

My 110 lb Newfoundland (see avatar) would be a bit much to haul. Because of our relative sizes, I am reluctant to try one of the bicycle "springer" jogging systems for dogs. If Alice took off, I think no spring would keep me and bike from being dragged away. However, my son and his GF just got a Silky Terrier. I could see taking 10 lb Harry for a ride in a messenger bag.

When my x and I broke up i used a bike trailer to haul my son around we had a 13 inch beagle at the time and she rode with us just fine. (had to part with her last year because of kids) but she was a well behaved older dog too

Check out Cycle-Tote Trailers http://www.cycletote.com/ They offer a DOG trailer. I have been using a Cycle Tote trailer for 5 years, great trailer! If your dogs are large you can get the trailer with brakes. My trailer has brakes and they work very well.

I use a leash to keep miss Ellie in the Burley trailer she rides in. I loop it around the built in seat belts a few times. She can sit or lay down, but can not get out. Ellie has topped out at 42 pounds and other than the weight, I hardly notice her.

if your dog doesn't want to stay put perhaps you should examine the possibility that it's not happy in there. i assume you're taking the dog for a ride for its pleasure, rather than your own ...

Ellie jumps in the trailer whenever I hitch it to my bike...so I know she likes it. I strap her in for her own safety. And on that note, I just got her a nice car seatbelt, which I am going to start using in the trailer.
