HELP! I recently installed a new flight deck (wireless) and cannot get the speed/odometer portion to work. The gear indicators work as I use the shifters so that part works. I installed a new battery in the wheel sensor. The distance between the magnet and the sensor is approx 2 mm. And the distance between the wheel sensor and the head unit is approx. 14". Anyone with any ideas of what I can check from here?

Although I have no remedy for your problem, I feel compelled to add to the "Flight Deck litany of woes". Personally, I think Shimano put this product out there before ironing out the kinks.

I installed an SM-6501/SC-6501 wireless on my roadbike back in July, and have not been able to get the gear indicator and cadence to work properly yet. I've done everything feasible; i.e., re-checking the crankset and cassette cogs (including manually counting them), re-entering the info numerous times, and re-seating the sensor units in the shifters (including inserting those little plastic squares to increase pressure against the sensors) to no avail.

The crankset always indicates properly (53/39); but the cassette only reads from 12 to 14, and then indicates 23 when shifted to the 15 to 23 cogs. Also, it doesn't always indicate shifts. And, in the cadence mode, the numbers are way too high (I know I'm not spinning that fast).

I'm gonna take it to my LBS authorized Shimano dealer before the spring. I mostly ride my hybrid right now.

Did your Flight Deck come with a thin plastic strip? In my instructions it said to utilize this for what I believe would solve your chain/gear selection display. Just a thought. Thankfully that is not a problem with mine!

UPDATE - FYI!

I had bought this unit from Supergo and their customer service/tech dept suggested that I swap the magnet end to end (north-south poles). That along with positioning the magnet a little further down the sensor, then what the Shimano installation guide shows, did the trick!

Here are a few items to double check:

1. The distance between the wheel sensor and magnet (although if you are getting a MPH reading this is probably ok (should be 1 mm to 5mm gap))

2. Although the unit is new - batteries!

3. Push the "default" button underneath and re-program the unit (just in case something happened to original programming.

4. If the STI sensors are working correctely I believe you should immediately see the chain/gear selections upon the "awaking" of the unit. If not the kit I just installed had some thin plastic stips that needed to be used in the event they didn't register.

Other then these item I don't have an answer for you. (this is a Shimano Flight Deck you are utilizing - right?) Also if you access the Shimano web site they will tell you what functions the Flight Deck will work with waht shifters.

Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone can help me. I have the sc - 6501 and although the rpm works and the miles per hour I just cant get the distance reader to log the distance covered . So if any one has any thoughts that would be greatfully appreciated .

Did you install it yourself or have your LBS install it? (BTW, you might have just broken the BF thread-revival record. Almost eight years!)

Whenever I install a wireless computer the first thing that I do is to install the sensor and wheel magnet. Then I hold the head unit close to the sensor and spin the wheel to make sure that I get an MPH reading. Then I move the head unit to where I plan to install it on the handlebar or stem. Sometimes the brake or fork or something appears to block the signal and I have to find another location for the head unit.
