Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Sexy handlebars

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've noticed many of the singlespeed bike posted here have curved handle bars that slope across the top more than your usual road bars. Where could I find this style of handle bar and what are they called?
Thanks

track drops I assume.
edit. Nitto makes some good ones that alot of people have. I prefer bullhorns, but that's just me.
Track drops, Nitto makes a model B123 that is very popular

Track bars have more of a sloped top than road bars do. Lots of bar makers make a track bar Nitto 123s seem to be one of the most popular bars. Soma makes a les expensive copy of the Nitto 123, and they also make the Major Taylor bar which is a copy of a 1920s design which I love. You can see them on the bike in my sig link

There's also the Nitto b125 if you prefer a shallower drop.

Or the Soma Major Taylors if you want something a bit different.

The major taylors compared to the b123s.
i really do like those major taylors. they're neato-cheato.

I have yet to hear anyone say anything overwhelmingly positive about the Major Taylors, other than that they look cool. They do look cool, though.

They are stiff as hell (probably not any stiffer than steel b123s). They are great for sprinting and climbing. I really like the flare of the drops. The position on the shoulders is comfy to me, but I wouldn't call it a comfy bar for long flat rides. The wrists tend to get tired when riding on the shoulders over a long period, but then no track bar is meant for touring.

Criterium bars -- I think the b125's are this shape -- are also great. I climb in the drops and the sloped shoulder provides ample clearance. Great for sprinting, too.

Cool, that is good to know. I was going to peer pressure my ladyfriend into buying a pair when we were in SF a few months ago, but the lack of positive reviews made me change my mind. At $35, I guess it's not that big a gamble.

I suppose it all depends what you like. I like the flared out grip position a lot, and I climb a lot, so it's nice not having the bars dig into my forearms or flex when I'm stomping it. I'm not sure they are any better in that regard than b123s, but hey as you noted before they also look really badass. I've thought about utting the brake on top, because I think it looks cool, but I find I want to be in the drops when bombing down hills at a zillion rpm, and that's the time I want the brake the most.
I'm planning on Midge bars for my Cyclocross bike, they appear to have that same outward flare, but with a nice wide flat top and shallow drop. Should be the perfect combination for that bike. A better choice for rough terrain, and/or longer rides. All the advantages of a wide flat bar, but with a nice flared drop as well.

- How the hell are these good for climbing?
- Comfy : track bike hipsters :: Yummy : Vegans
I mean really comfy generally doesn't mean adaqiate for a short period of time.

don't flex at all when I'm stomping up hills, don't dig into my forearms, nice and wide.
there are plenty of positions that are comfy for short periods of time. I like sitting on my feet for short periods of time. it's comfy. After a while though they go to sleep, and that's not. I like riding around town with my hands on the shoulders, it feels good. after a while the weight gets to my wrists. that's not comfy. My fixed gear bike is not a touring bike. I use gears for that. These bars suit their purpose on this bike for me well, but I wouldn't recommend them to everyone for every bike. If I were to attempt a 5 hour ride on my fixie those bars would be the first thing to go.

I love eating vegan food too. It's the vegans that make it crunchy! :p
Being judgemental of people because they are different from you is fun for the whole family! "I don't like vegan food because it's bad!" "I don't like track bikes because they are bad!" Screw that. the world is full of a vast diversity of bikes, and a vast diversity of people. no one bike is right for everyone, heck no one bike is right for me, that's why I need a zillion of the damn things. I happen to have a fetish for odball handlebars. Guess I must be one of those bad hipster vegan devil worshipers you hear so much about these days. blah... I'm hungry think I'm gonna go eat the **** out of some vegan :p

You missed the joke. Vegans insist that most vegan things are yummy. Track bike hipsters insist that all sorts of track specific stuff is comfy. Noone outside these two groups would call most of what they are talking about yummy or comfy respectively.

raw foods are nutty. there was a raw restaurant near where i grew up, they gave away some recipies... soaking rice for 12 hours to make it soft! If I cant get food within 45 minutes of me getting hungry I get a little crazy :D

It certainly isn't for everyone. And it most definitely isn't convenient. But the pros far outweigh the cons for me. I really need to get back on it and eat better.

but cheese is so tasty! my old roomate was lactose intolerant and it sucked cuz whenever we ordered pizza he'd have to take over the bathroom for the next hour, and then we had to wait another hour for the smell to subside.

SCRUMPTIOUS!
I have gotten dairy eaters to quit ice cream in favor of Tofutti.
----
so off topic but:
I think it's alot of bull**** to say that taste is objective despite the fact that people's tastes and taste buds are subjective. And you know what, I can say the same about comfort! I like riding with Cateye bar tape and no gloves, no padding whatsoever on my bars. Many would say that it's not comfy. Sometimes I get tingling in my nerves from hilly, jolty rides to/from work but my hands and their muscles are all comfy. I feel padding intereferes with my ride.

I encourage anyone who tells me animal free foods are gross to come to dinner at my apartment tonight for a free buffet. On the menu is an appetizing salad to start off. It's a patented raw veggie salad. Turnips, carrots, radishes and beets are minced onto bronze lettuce with a homemade italian dressing. Main course is refried beans with basil mixed with fried tofu in a garlic pita bread. For dessert, Tofutti!

there's something called herb salt which flavors soups really well. I've yet to try it.

Track drops killed me, I have a free pair off a Bianchi Pista for whomever would like them... if you could give me a few bucks for shipping that would be great. Notice: the reseson I got rid of them, made my arms go numb by riding on the flats. The curve on the flats pinch blood flow... atleast for me,and a few others. They are designed to be ridden in the drops. PM me if you would like the track bars, first come first serve

Once again the search feature is your friend. He mostly posts in the road forum, but back in January he was posting about entry level track bikes here. He was leaning towards IRO. Is it really that much of a stretch to think he decided on a Pista?
